Oranienplatz Asylum Seekers

Oranienplatz is a quaint square in the hip district of Kreuzberg in Berlin. In November 2012 a group of asylum seekers occupied the square and built themselves a place to live as a form of protest against the poor conditions offered by the German government. Most of the migrants were from West Africa, and came to Europe in boats across the Mediterranean, fleeing the conflicts of the Arab Spring. This controversial community survived until its self-destruction in April 2014 after an agreement between the inhabitants and the senate.
